Alarms and cctv help and advice: Online buyers beware

Alarms and cctv help and advice: Online buyers bewareClick here to view a reputable site

Online buyers beware

Warning to those buying cctv online:

Buying CCTV online presents many challenges. China must think that the main way to make money is to develop cheap cctv systems and sell to the entire world as the highest resolution, feature packed video surveillance equipment in the world. Buying CCTV equipment online presents many situations which invoke the old latin phrase "Caveat Emptor", which means "Let the buyer beware".

My comments to follow pertain to any product purchased online, much less online cctv purchases. When you are searching the internet for the right cctv system for your home or business please do your self a favor and do a little homework.

Check the domain name at whois.com to see who or what country actually owns that domain name
Search that website for a phone number
Search the website for an "about us page" that details their real company name and address.
Read their return/repair policy pages
Check with various internet organizations to verify the website identity
Verify that they actually do hava a secure website for buying cctv online from them.
Search DNS records to see how old the domain name is.
If they have a phone number, call them to verify they actually have the product in stock. Most unreputable online websites set the stock levels of any product they sell to an infinite number. They do this to gain your confidence when buying. If they have an incredible deal but no inventory in their shopping cart, they know you will go someplace else.
Many sites post fake "trusted business" icons. Check them. Anyone can put a graphic on their site they says they are trusted.
Remember Andy Rooney from 60 minutes: The importance of what is in an envelope is directly proportional to what is printed on the outside of an envelope. This means that the more text and type that is printed on the outside of the envelope means that what is in the envelop probably is of no significance. The more that a website is trying to impress you with how trusted they are, may be a warning sign.
Protect yourself from false advertising.
Watch out when buying cctv online when the deal is too good to be true.
Watch out when buying cctv online when you are then brought to an Amazon or EBay shopping site
Look for the specific manufacturers website of the internet site you are buying from. If the site is NOT an authorized reseller of the brand you are looking to buy from them, you may be in trouble down the road

Fitting an alarm gives you peace of mind

Alarm systems are a worthwhile investment in the protection of your home and family. Studies reveal that it is far less likely that you will become the victim of a burglary at home if you have a correctly fitted and well maintained burglar alarm

Security systems are a worthwhile investment.

Alarms and Cctv worth while ?

A CCTV system can prevent a crime by deterring potential criminals with the physical presence of a camera. This can be done with presence of cameras and CCTV monitors to staff at cashiers and the front of house staff. This prevents crime committed by criminals who do it on impulse and greatly reduce the numbers of shoplifters and car theft as fear strikes them at the core and thus paralyzing them from committing the crime. Not only does it deter unplanned crime, but it also gives a sense of security and safety to your other customers and employees knowing that everything that happened at the location is recorded.

Likewise the visual deterrent of an external sounder, especially with flashing LEDs .
Will certainly deter potential intruders as a modern bell box mounted outside will infer that there is an up to date system inside of the property.

Has uk become a surveillance society

In 2006 the Information Commissioner surprised everyone by stating that the UK has become a surveillance society.

The UK has the the highest degree of surveillance in Europe, and one of the biggest surveillance networks in the world.

As Surveillance Watchers points out:

The word surveillance has been derived from the French word which literally means “watching over.” So surveillance refers to the art of watching over people or things or objects. But nowadays the word has come to represent intrusion into privacy, not least through surveillance by governments and private business.

The problem is, people easily forget why the UK has pushed so hard on surveillance in society.

It was in response to IRA bombings that the UK rolled out wide scale CCTV camera operations in London in the first place – before expanding them out across major city centres.

And, of course, the fall out from 9/11 means that security and surveillance issues have again become a major concern for the UK, and incidents such as the 7/7 London Tube attacks reinforce the need for continued vigilance.

Unfortunately, I don’t fit the bill – while I think surveillance can be a good thing, I think in the most part, it’s too susceptible to bad management, poor implementation, and lacks basic privacy protections.

The real problem at heart is that while surveillance is a great idea in theory, in practice it falls too far short of it’s aspirations.

An ideal surveillance system will stop crime before it starts – not simply be used to catch perpetrators after the fact.

In the meantime, I have no doubt that the UK will continue to develop as a surveillance society, and that we will continue to face intrusions against our personal privacy.

And, unfortunately, I think for some time to come, the short-comings of what should be a far more useful surveillance system will continue to be reported.

Is the UK a surveillance society? Almost certainly. But the best advantages of surveillance in theory has yet to be made practical in fact.

What is the best cctv camera for me ?

Questions to find the best surveillance camera
Are indoor or outdoor security cameras needed?
What type of lighting is available at night?
What is the field of view you are trying to see?
How will the cameras be mounted?
Do I have enough security cameras to cover the area?
Will security cameras with infrared LED's be needed to see in the dark?
Are bullet cameras, dome cameras or box cameras better for your installation?
What image resolution or picture quality are you expecting?
Do you expect to have to provide security camera recording to law enforcement in the future?

You learn something new everyday .

Found out another option to reset Texecom Veritas alarm panels to default settings today.
You simply press the main board tamper spring three times. We have been registered Texecom installers for over a decade and didn't know this ?
But be aware that the engineer code may have been changed and locked in. If this happens simply wire the system to the preset configuration. Simples !

Simply not cricket

Had a nice day (apart from the gale force wind), alarming Thornaby Cricket Club.
Straight forward layout didn't take long but it will certainly keep them from breaking in again.
